Lyle Dayman
Following a lifetime in advertising Lyle Dayman decided the time was right to reinvent himself as an artist.
Beginning with watercolour in the mid 1990's, he had lessons with Greg Allen and Ross Paterson in Victoria. Moving back to South Australia in 2003, he began experimenting with pastels. A workshop with Maxwell Wilks in 2006 was sufficient to convince him to continue with the pastel as a major interest.
Lyle had several solo and dual exhibitions in Victoria and his first solo exhibition in a capital city (Adelaide) in 2005. He has won several Best Watercolour prizes in both States. In 2008 he was elevated to Fellowship of the Royal South Australian Society of Arts. Lyle was president of Pastel Artists of South Australia in 2008 and 2009.

After 36 years teaching in the primary and preschool sectors, I retired and became involved in the art world. Having never studied painting at school or even held a paintbrush or pastel in my hand I had a great deal to learn but what I lacked in experience I made up for enthusiasm. It was recommended that I try pastel. Well that proved to be an absolute delight. I joined the Pastel Artists of South Australia and been able to learn a great deal from other members and demonstrators who willing share their experience and expertise.
I joined the Monday Art Class at Hove where Cynthia Dowler was our guiding light, motivator and problem solver. The support I have received from the folk in this class has been greatly appreciated.
I was a previous secretary of the Pastel Artists of South Australia. This of course takes quite a considerable amount of time. I also work in an art store, which is invigorating and rewarding. I therefore do not spend as much as time painting as I would like. Perhaps when I retire for the second time I can focus on my art.
Carol Coventry
I have been a member of PASA since 2001, shortly after it was formed and for the last 8 years have been a committee member, holding a variety of positions including President.
For some 18 years I had painted in oils and watercolours, before being introduced to pastels in 1998 and discovering that they have wonderfully vibrant colours that lend themselves to all the subjects that I want to paint - animals, especially cats, landscapes and seascapes.
Over the years I have studied with many great teachers, including Chris Orchard, Max Wilks, Ross Paterson, Brian Allison and Kellie Fergusson. I currently study with Graham Pankhurst at the Hindmarsh Island Drawing Group.
I have won many awards, including the Gold Medal award in 2005 by the Pastel Artists of South Australia at Gallery M. In 2000 I was a finalist in the Fleurieu Biennale. I have been a finalist in the Heysen Landscape Art Prize for 7 years, from 2001 to 2007. I won major prizes in the Clare Rotary Art Show in 2005 and 2006, and in 2004 I was the overall winner of the Jamestown Art Show. I have also won many awards in the Royal Adelaide Art purchase.
I have been a member of the Off the Slate Gallery in Willunga since 2007 and regularly exhibit at the Porter Street Wildlife Gallery and the Regional Gallery, both in Goolwa.
Cynthia Dowler was born in South Australia. During her school years she was awarded scholarships to attend art school, at the end of her school years she went on to pursue her interests in portraiture with May Grigg, who helped to develop her skills in tonal realism with the aid of classical plaster busts. Cynthia was introduced to the pastel medium by studying with Ingrid Earns and over time gained recognition as a pastel portrait artist, particularly with young children's studies. She continued her studies later at the North Adelaide School of Arts from 1980 to 1986 successfully completing the Associate Diploma course in Fine Art, majoring in Painting. Cynthia is a founding member of the Pastel Artists of South Australia (PASA) and a long standing Fellow of the Royal South Australian Society of Arts (RSASA). Cynthia has participated in and received awards from many local and interstate exhibitions, and continues with her portraits, while tutoring and doing workshops, her oil portrait of Dr. Marlene Edwards was a finalist in the Portia Geach Memorial Award Exhibition, which is held for woman portrait artists of Australia, and she is shown at the S.H. Ervin Gallery in Sydney each year. She works in oil, pastel, acrylic and other dry mediums like charcoal and conté.

Jennifer Hockey
Jennifer was born in England in 1941, the daughter of an English mother and Dutch father. She lived for many years in the Cornish fishing village of Polperro and studied art at the Plymouth College of arts in the late 1950's.
Jennifer arrived in South Australia with her husband and two children in 1966. In the mid 1970's she joined one of the local art groups which rekindled her enthusiasm for painting and prompted her to attend tutorials by several established painters. As a result of developing her skills in pastel and watercolour, and having created her own individual style, Jennifer is now conducting classes and workshops to pass on her techniques to others.
She is a fellow of the Royal Australian Society of Arts, long standing member of the Adelaide Arts Society and joint founding member of the Pastel Artists of South Australia (PASA).
Jennifer has submitted open and category first prize winning entries at many major South Australian exhibitions and art festivals. Her work has been hung in mixed exhibitions and many galleries throughout Adelaide and interstate. She has had two very successful solo exhibitions in the early 1990's.
Recently Jennifer has concentrated less on exhibition and more on portraiture and exploring her techniques. Her preferred subjects include life drawing, portraiture, Cornish fishing villages and landscapes.
Kerryn Hocking
Animals and drawing have been Kerryn's lifelong passions. She began drawing horses, which then led to a deeper interest and respect for all other animals and their inter-relationships. Kerryn believes that colour, light, nature, plants and animals can bring so much pleasure if one takes the time to notice. Her art is directed towards bringing attention to the necessity for protecting all living plants and animals. She admires nature’s remarkable diversity and hopes to encourage people towards an appreciation, respect, responsibility and understanding of the need to protect all of it in order for man and our planet to survive. Kerryn gains as much pleasure from being with the animals and photographing them as she does painting them. She actively supports conservation programs at Adelaide and Monarto Zoos with part proceeds of her art sales. Kerryn also sponsors two orang-utan orphans in Borneo and three elephant orphans in Kenya. Kerryn has had guidance and support from Janine Parsons and has now become an active member of Pastel Artists of South Australia.

I began drawing when I was very young and haven't stopped. I began studying Art on saturday mornings when I was 10, progressing to advanced classes at the SA School of Art on North Terrace at 12. Later I completed a Diploma of Fine Art (Sculpture) with Alex Leckie, Max Lyle and Owen Broughton, also at the SA School of Art. Each year I won awards for Life Modelling and Sculpture. I have exhibited sculptures at the Bonython and Cricklewood Galleries and have several works in private collections in Adelaide and the United States. I taught Art in Secondary Schools for 8 years before raising a family and later completed a Bachelor of Education, Secondary Art Teaching, at UNISA, majoring in Ceramics and Printmaking. I then taught Art and Design at an Independent School for the next twenty years, the last five as Co-ordinator for Art, Design and Technology. During this time I attended numerous courses in Computer Graphics, skills which I used extensively in both Art and Design. Since retiring I have enjoyed exploring pastels and belong to the Mitcham Community Art Group and PASA. I have enjoyed attending three PASA workshops this year and am lining up for the 2012 workshops. My other main interest is music and I play the flute in the City of Holdfast Bay Concert Band.
Margaret McEntee
I am a foundation member of the Pastel Artists of South Australia and attend the group which meets monthly in Victor Harbor. My art career commenced at the Girls Central School of Art, North Terrace, Adelaide in the 1950's. I began working in pastels in 1996 after returning home from the UK and the continent and my first works were inspired by village scenes in France and Italy which I executed with pastel pencils. On being given a set of hard pastel sticks I proceeded to do further works, moving into flowers. Irises particularly captivated me and the landscapes, especially of the Flinders Ranges where much time was spent camping. Later having purchased Rembrandt soft pastels, I found that these added greatly to what could be achieved. Experimenting with various pastel papers has enabled me to further develop my pastel experience and satisfaction with this exciting medium. The afternoons spent with other Pastel Artists here in Victor Harbor are always pleasant times. I particularly enjoy working together, seeing improvement taking place and giving help and doing critiques when asked. I have been a demonstrator at Victor Harbor and also at Hove. Working out of doors at a couple of workshops has been enjoyable and productive. I am a Fellow of the Royal South Australian Society of Artists, a member of the Southern Districts Art Society and President of the Ocean Art Gallery in Railway Terrace, Victor Harbor. You can peruse my CV at www.theartvault.com.au and follow the links from National Artists. Also, you can see my work at www.margaretmcentee.com Pastels are a wonderful medium. I also work in oils, pen, pencil, charcoal and watercolour. I can be contacted at home where I have a Studio and Gallery available for viewing. Pet Portraits are my specialty.
Working mainly in Pastel I have been drawing since old enough to hold a pencil.
Animals have always held a special place in my heart; dogs, cats, budgies and even a horse have all been a part of our household.
Being able to create a painting that captures the character of an individual animal is always a joy for me, particularly if it is a cherished pet. To see a portrait of a treasured canine or feline member of one's family always brings pleasure to their owners, often with tears of happiness. This certainly makes it worth the extra time and effort it takes me to get a really good likeness.
Domestic, native and exotic animals & birds are all favourite subjects for me when not engaged in a commissioned Pet Portrait.
In 2010 as well as launching my Pet Portrait business I had some of my bird paintings printed and released as blank cards.
Living in Loxton in the Riverland South Australia, I am surrounded by vines and orchards as well as native bushland teeming with birds of many kinds and the River Murray.

Di has a passion for pastels, from the vibrant colours to the softer hues. Her subjects include land and seascapes, domestic pets, animals, children's portraits, still life and many other subjects.
After rearing four sons and working, Di retired seven years ago. Finally able to pursue her desire to paint, Di joined the Hove Community Centre Art Group, headed by Cynthia Dowler, a well known artist, which has provided a source of skill, inspiration and encouragement by a group of like minded people.

My favourite medium is pastel, closely followed by watercolour, dyes on silk and acrylics.
I was born in Whyalla, South Australia, and came to live in Adelaide in 1992. I am a Past President of Whyalla Art Group, Past President of Adelaide Art Society ( Life member of both groups ) and current member of Pastel Artists of South Australia. I am also a Fellow of the Royal South Australian Society of Arts and have had two shared exhibitions at Lombard Gallery with my silk paintings.
I have twice won the Resident Art Award for Campbelltown and several other awards and prizes throughout the state. My paintings are owned by people living in the USA, UK as well as Australia.
I love to paint almost every day and get pretty cranky if I can't paint after a few days. I have been painting for more than 30 years. If I am not painting I am dressmaking or reading books. There is no such thing as boredom in my life. Glenda is currently President of Pastel Artists of South Australia
