PASA - Pastel Artists of South Australia

A Plethora of Demonstrators at October meeting

The October meeting at Cooinda featured 3 demonstrators, each with a unique style and approach to pastels.  Jill Hansberry,  used pastel and pastel pencils to paint purple irises.  Working with a limited palette of colours, Jill draws up the picture before homing in on one area of the painting.  Colours are gradually built up before adding detail with pastel pencils.  Karan Hudson demonstrated a 'wash off' technique which involved gouache, waterfast inks, a basin of water and patience to quickly produce a large body of work to which watercolour and pastels may be used to complete.  David Chalmers used conte pencil to draw up a landscape before adding colour with pastels.  Participants had the opportunity to discuss and share their experiences with the various mediums with each other as well as the demonstrators.
